Since each person is different, your dosage of Lipitor - atorvastatin will vary, based on your personal medical history and age, amongst other factors. The typical starting dosage of Lipitor for the treatment of high cholesterol is 10 mg to 20 mg once daily. If your cholesterol is extremely high, your dosage may begin at 40 mg once a day.

The drug can be taken once a day, with or without meal. Even though you can choose the timing of taking the drug, you have to maintain the same time every day. It is known that the drug starts to work in two weeks time.

Lipitor dosage for children

The recommended starting dosage of Lipitor for children (ages 10 to 17) with high cholesterol is Lipitor 10 mg once a day. If your child does not reach his or her cholesterol goal taking the initial Lipitor dosage, your healthcare provider may choose to increase the dose. The doctor may decrease the dosage if Lipitor side effects occur. The maximum daily Lipitor dosage for children is Lipitor 20 mg.
