Starting Norvasc dosage to treat high blood pressure

The usual dose of Norvasc (amlodipine) is a single 5 or 10 mg tablet per day. Be sure your doctor knows about any other blood pressure medication you're taking. If you are taking other blood pressure medications you might be prescribed a single 2.5 mg tablet once per day. The 2.5 mg dose is also prescribed as a starting dosage for the elderly, whose dosage may be elevated to 5 mg if the drug is well tolerated. Your doctor may also prescribe the 2.5 mg dose if you have impaired hepatic (liver) function or if prescribing for a child between 6 and 17 years old. The safety and effectiveness in children under age 6 has not been established so they should not use Norvasc.

This dosage is only given as a guideline as blood pressure medication can vary in dosage from person to person. Consult with your personal health care specialist to obtain the precise dosage best suited for you. Never attempt to self medicate, and do not alter the dosage your doctor gave you, either by modifying the dose or the time interval between doses.

For angina, the usual initial dose is 5 mg Norvasc once daily which may be increased to a maximum dose of 10 mg depending on the individual patient's response after 10-14 days therapy. No dose adjustment of Norvasc is required during combined administration of thiazide diuretics, beta blockers, or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.
